PowerUp is a mobile app with the ultimate goal of "gamifying" your fitness. Every user selects an avatar character to represent them in the game. Your activity earns you points, which are counted in your daily matchup against another user. I was the only illustrator on this project, and worked directly with the team of engineers and the UI designer to build this app from the ground up. All characters, environments, items, logos and icons were designed by me with input from the team.
Every user selects an avatar character to represent them in PowerUp. We ultimately decided on four animal avatars, each paired with a specific sport. A cyclist Flamingo, runner Gazelle, weight-lifting Bear, and a surfing Otter. All the avatars are gender-neutral, so each avatar is open to all users. I wanted to make sure all four characters were vastly different, from their sizes and shapes to the color palette. I also wanted to make each avatar have a specific and unique personality, that reflects the sport and animal they represent.
Each avatar is also represented in their sport-specific environment. There is a lot of information displayed in the app, and for the backgrounds we decided to keep them as simple as possible. For each place, the deep background is kept totally white, and I used a limited color palette for each. This allowed the avatars to really stand out and let the users fully experience them without being distracted by the backgrounds.
As the user progresses in the game, select gear is available to "purchase" for their avatar. Here is a small selection of some of the gear we have available in the marketplace. Above you can see each avatar fully equipped in their gear.
PowerUp has many buttons and icons used throughout the app as well. I was fortunate to be able to design these too, in addition to the app logo. For our logo, we wanted to play on the animal theme, but also incorporate the fitness and game elements to it. If you look closely the bottom pad of our paw print, it's an upside-down heart with the EKG pulsing through it. To hint at the game element, the app's countdown timer circles the paw.
Each user's profile screen button reflects the avatar they chose. Our game also has a "taunting" element, where the user can send emojis to their daily opponent. These were all custom designed for our app to give the user a range of emotions (whether winning or losing) to express to their opponent. The user's activity feed features icons to show what type of activity they gained points for. Paw prints represent steps taken, a mountain represents flights of stairs climbed, and a heart with an EKG shows heart rate increase. The navigation bar also features two other buttons, a basket takes you to the marketplace screen and a "vs" symbol takes you to your daily matchup screen.
